Yoga & Social Justice Challenge Day 3: Tapas

Day 3 of the Yoga and Social Justice Challenge focuses on Tapas. Tapas is the zeal that propels us forward in our practice and to make change. It is associated strongly with fire.

Tapas Half Salutation Poem or Practice, by Susanna Barkataki

https://youtu.be/g3v6hr5TqIA

I honor yoga
Igniting light
By holding tension for equity
I invoke Yoga as unity
Let me be a bridge to action for justice
Yoga moves through me
Igniting the fire
of yoga as unity

Half Salutation Poses

After a car crash three years ago, I am still using a chair for some things, including this mini-salutation for justice:

  • Tadasana / Urdhva Namaskarasana
  • Ardha Parsvottanasana (Half Flank pose with hands on chair -> pushing chair away)
  • Parsvottanasana (hands can be on blocks)
  • Prasarita Padottanasana (again, hands and/or head can be on blocks)
  • Parsvottanasana to the other side
  • Ardha Parsvottanasansa
  • Tadasana / Urdhva Namaskarasana
